I absolutely love writing for our local paper. I was born in a small town in Western Kansas and hold anything “local” no matter where, in high regard. When Jennifer Wake called a few weeks ago and asked if I’d be interested in writing a regular column every other issue in Our Homes Section for the Lamorinda Weekly (covers three tight knit bucolic Northern California Towns/Cities: Lafayette, Moraga and Orinda), I could not say YES fast enough.
It was better than getting a call from the biggies in the Design Business (though, Elle Decor, you know my answer is always yes for you as well)

I have long enjoyed reading this section and perusing the fabulous garden tips and local musings. Heaven.
This week, my contribution is on Drought Wise Decorating. As we ride the current California Drought, how DO you design when your aesthetic does not mesh with succulents?
I work for a long list of clients for whom contemporary design and succulent low to no water plants are the norm. Especially those with Desert or Mountain Properties. But when the design turns traditional and the placement of a cactus looks akin to a sage green clown nose on a princess clad in pale yellow tulle….well…time to get creative.
The article, linked HERE (link arrives June 4, 2014), tackles three tips. Make sure to read it and let Jennifer know you are pleased as punch that Ann is contributing! Let’s show our support for the hard working crew behind every local effort out there.
I’ve included a few more out takes from the photo shoot (thank you Faryn Davis Photography) so you can see we really do mean business when it comes to preparing our Clients’ outdoor spaces. These photos are from an indoor/outdoor space with three planned summer parties.

The boldness was intentional. Once the summer entertaining season has passed, many of the over the top patterns will be put aside for a more tranquil look.

Have a great week – and if you aren’t subscribed to this blog, make sure to do so. We don’t over post (trust me) and we honor time.
All my best,
Ann McDonald
